BLM Gathers 323 Wild Horses Near Reno to Shield Them From Drought and Fire Damage

A BLM operation moved 323 horses to protect them from shrinking forage after recent wildfires and ongoing drought.

The Bureau of Land Management finished a wild‑horse gather near Reno on Oct 22, relocating 323 animals to keep them safe as the range can no longer sustain the herd size. The effort aims to prevent hunger, dehydration, exhaustion and injury while helping the land recover. Recent fires in the North Complex burned a total of 93,733 acres, including 4,588 acres in the Dogskin Mountains herd area and 1,619 acres in Granite Peak. Combined with persistent drought, the loss of vegetation has left limited food and water, prompting the gather to protect the horses' long‑term health and improve range conditions.
