November 3, 2026 · Read at American Hunter →The hides harvested at Troops & Tusks’ feral hog tournament are turned into useful products, ensuring nothing goes to waste and supporting veteran causes.
When the hogs are weighed and the meat is processed, the hides are carefully removed and set aside for further work. Volunteers and local partners clean the skins, remove any remaining tissue, and preserve them for leather production. This first step keeps the hides in good condition and ready for the next stage.
The cleaned hides are then sent to regional tanneries that specialize in converting raw skins into durable leather. From there, the leather is used to make a variety of items such as belts, wallets, and outdoor gear. Some of the finished goods are sold at local craft fairs, while others are donated directly to veterans and community groups, creating a tangible link between the hunt and everyday life.
Because every hide is utilized, the tournament contributes to a zero‑waste approach. Reducing the hog population lessens the roughly 76 million dollars of agricultural damage the species causes each year in Louisiana. At the same time, turning hides into useful products provides a modest source of income that supports Fredrick Hebert VFW Post 4158, Hero Hunts, and other veteran assistance programs.
The effort also honors the memory of the many veterans we have lost, including the heartbreaking statistic that about 23 veterans a day are lost to suicide in this country. By turning a challenging wildlife problem into a community benefit, the tournament offers a small but meaningful way to give back and keep the spirit of service alive.
