From Field to Freezer: How a Harvested Hog Feeds Those in Need

A clear look at each step that turns a tournament hog into a food‑bank freezer staple for Acadiana families.

When a team of hunters and a veteran bring a feral hog down on their own land, the first priority is safety and accurate weighing. The weight is recorded for tournament scoring and to help track the impact of removing animals that cause about 76 million dollars of agricultural damage in Louisiana each year.

The hog is then taken to a designated processing area where volunteers, many of them fellow veterans, remove the hide and trim the meat. Each carcass is inspected for quality, and any portions that are not suitable for consumption are set aside for other uses such as pet food or compost.

Clean, portioned meat is packed in freezer‑grade bags, labeled with the tournament date, and loaded onto refrigerated trucks. Local food banks in Acadiana receive the shipments on a regular schedule, allowing them to stock freezers with protein that would otherwise be unavailable to families facing food insecurity.

For the veterans who participate, the work offers a sense of purpose and camaraderie at a time when about 23 veterans a day are lost to suicide in this country. By turning a pest into a resource, the tournament supports both the land and the community, providing a tangible way to give back while honoring those who serve.
