Marsh, Ag Land and Pine: Understanding Louisiana’s Three Hog Grounds

A quick guide for Acadiana hunters, veterans and volunteers on how to work each of Louisiana’s main hog habitats.

Marsh, agricultural fields and pine woods make up the three primary hog grounds in Acadiana. Marshes provide water and dense vegetation that let hogs move quietly, while open fields attract them for easy foraging on crops and fallen fruit. Pine forests offer cover, cool soil and abundant acorns, creating a year‑round refuge for the animals.

Each environment calls for a different approach. In marshes, hunters often use boats or wade carefully to stay silent, and dogs can be trained to track scent along the water’s edge. On farms, early morning or late evening hunts work best when hogs are feeding on crops, and setting up bait stations near fence lines can increase success. Pine stands require patience and knowledge of hog trails; moving slowly and using blinds near known travel corridors helps keep the animals from spooking.

Controlling hog populations protects both the land and the people who depend on it. The species causes about 76 million dollars of agricultural damage in Louisiana each year, a burden that falls heavily on family farms and local food supplies. By hunting responsibly on marsh, ag land and pine, volunteers help reduce that impact and keep the ecosystems healthier.

The tournament also offers a chance for veterans to find purpose in the outdoors. Bringing a veteran into each hunt creates camaraderie, provides physical activity, and gives a sense of contribution. With about 23 veterans a day lost to suicide in this country, the shared experience of a successful hunt can be a small but meaningful step toward healing.

If you have land, a boat, a dog or simply a willingness to help, consider joining the next hog control effort. Together we can protect our fields, preserve our wetlands and support those who have served, all while providing meat for food kitchens and families in need.
