Packing List for Your First February Hog Weekend

A practical checklist of gear and supplies to help first‑time teams stay safe, comfortable, and focused on the hunt and the mission.

A February hog weekend is a long day in the field, so start with the basics: layered clothing that can handle early morning chill and midday heat, waterproof boots with good ankle support, and a sturdy hat for sun protection. Pack a reliable flashlight or headlamp with extra batteries, a warm jacket, and a change of dry socks. Don’t forget a high‑visibility safety vest; it helps teammates spot each other in low light and keeps you visible to any passing vehicles.

Safety and communication are essential. Bring a fully charged cell phone and a portable power bank, plus a two‑way radio if your group uses one. A basic first‑aid kit with bandages, antiseptic wipes, pain relievers, and any personal medications should be within easy reach. A map of the property, a compass, and a whistle can be lifesavers if you become separated.

Hunting gear should be practical and well‑maintained. Check that your firearm or bow is clean, sighted, and has enough ammunition or arrows for the day. Pack a sturdy hunting knife, gloves, and a small game bag for the hogs you bring home. Remember to bring a cooler with ice packs for the harvested hogs, and a separate cooler for food and drinks to stay hydrated and energized.

Finally, think about the community aspect of the weekend. Bring a reusable water bottle, a simple snack, and a contribution for the communal meal-something easy to share like a bag of chips or a fruit tray. Most importantly, bring an open mind, respect for the veteran you are hunting with, and a willingness to learn. The goal is to help control the hog population, support veteran programs, and give back to families in need, all while enjoying the camaraderie of the hunt.
