The 23 Veterans a Day Reason Behind the Tournament

Each day, 23 veterans are lost to suicide, a reality that drives the purpose of the annual feral hog tournament.

Every day, 23 veterans in this country die by suicide. That stark number is the heartbeat of the tournament, reminding us that hunting can be more than sport - it can be a lifeline for those who have served.

By inviting a veteran onto each hunting team, the event creates a space where camaraderie, purpose, and the rhythm of the outdoors replace isolation. The shared focus on tracking and harvesting a hog gives participants a chance to connect, talk openly, and experience the confidence that comes from a successful hunt.

At the same time, the tournament tackles a serious local problem. Feral hogs cause about 76 million dollars of agricultural damage in Louisiana each year, and the meat harvested is donated to food kitchens, families in need, and the veterans themselves. Proceeds support Fredrick Hebert VFW Post 4158, Hero Hunts and other veteran assistance programs.

For hunters, veterans and volunteers in Acadiana, the tournament is a reminder that every hog taken and every dollar raised is a step toward reducing the 23‑a‑day loss and protecting our land. Participation is a simple way to honor service, protect farms, and feed the community.
