Welcoming a First-Time Veteran Hunter to Camp

A warm guide for volunteers and hunters to help a veteran experience the outdoors safely and meaningfully for the first time.

Bringing a veteran who has never held a rifle into the camp environment is a chance to share the peace of the woods and the camaraderie of the hunt. A calm, respectful introduction sets the tone for a day that can be both therapeutic and rewarding, especially when the purpose is to protect local farms and support fellow veterans.

Start with the basics: a clear safety briefing, a quick fit of proper gear, and an introduction to the camp layout. Pair the newcomer with an experienced hunter who can act as a mentor, showing how to handle a firearm, how to move quietly through the brush, and how to respect the land. Simple checklists for equipment, hearing protection, and water keep the focus on safety and comfort.

Explain the larger mission. Feral hogs cause about 76 million dollars of agricultural damage in Louisiana each year, and each hog taken helps reduce that burden while providing meat for food kitchens and veterans. Knowing that the hunt contributes to both land stewardship and community support can give the veteran a sense of purpose beyond the day’s activity.

Finally, remind the veteran that the camp is a place to connect, not just to hunt. With about 23 veterans a day lost to suicide in this country, the bonds formed in the field can be a lifeline. Encourage open conversation, share resources, and let the veteran know that the doors of Troops & Tusks are always open for continued support and fellowship.
