Welcoming a First-Time Veteran Hunter to Camp

A simple guide to help volunteers and hunters make a veteran’s first hunting experience safe, supportive and rewarding.

Bringing a veteran who has never hunted before into a camp is more than a day on the field; it is an opportunity to share the quiet focus of the woods, to build trust, and to show how hunting can be part of a healing routine. In Louisiana the feral hog problem costs about 76 million dollars each year, so every responsible hunt also helps protect neighbors and farms.

Start with a clear orientation. Walk the veteran through camp rules, safety protocols, and the basic gear they will use. Pair them with an experienced volunteer who can act as a buddy, answer questions, and keep a watchful eye on comfort levels. A short checklist of equipment - boots, hearing protection, a clean firearm or bow, and proper clothing - helps avoid surprises.

During the hunt keep the pace relaxed. Allow frequent breaks, check in on how the veteran feels, and remind them that it is okay to step back if anything feels overwhelming. The camaraderie of the group and the shared goal of controlling hogs can provide a sense of purpose, especially when we remember that about 23 veterans a day are lost to suicide in this country.

After the day ends, involve the veteran in processing the hogs, cleaning the meat, and seeing the donations go to food kitchens and families in need. Seeing the tangible impact of their effort reinforces the connection between the hunt, community support, and personal well‑being. A respectful, patient approach makes the first experience memorable and may open the door to a lifelong partnership with the outdoors.
