Welcoming a First-Time Veteran Hunter to the Camp

A practical guide for volunteers and seasoned hunters to support a veteran’s first day on the feral hog tournament grounds.

Bringing a veteran who has never hunted before into the camp is a chance to share the camaraderie of the outdoors while contributing to a cause that helps families, food kitchens and the veterans themselves. Start with a warm, informal greeting and a brief walk around the site so the newcomer can see the gear, the safety stations and the volunteers who keep everything running. Keep the conversation focused on what they can expect, the rhythm of a day on the field and the simple steps that keep everyone safe.

Safety is the first priority. Review the basic firearm or bow safety rules, point out the designated loading zones and explain how the hog weigh‑in and skinning stations operate. Pair the veteran with an experienced hunter who can act as a mentor for the day; this buddy system builds confidence and ensures that any questions are answered in real time. Remember that the environment can be noisy and intense, so encourage the veteran to speak up if anything feels unclear.

Beyond the hunt, emphasize the larger purpose of the tournament. The hogs that are harvested are processed for food kitchens and families in need, and the proceeds support Fredrick Hebert VFW Post 4158, Hero Hunts and other veteran assistance programs. Knowing that each animal contributes to feeding the community can add a sense of meaning to the experience, especially when many veterans face the daily challenge of mental health, with about 23 lost to suicide each day in this country.

End the day with a simple debrief. Ask the veteran how the experience felt, what they enjoyed and what could be improved for future outings. A sincere thank you and an invitation to return for the next season can turn a first outing into a lasting tradition of service, fellowship and stewardship of the land.
