Feral hogs have become a constant presence in Louisiana rice paddies, rooting through flooded fields and tearing up young plants. The damage they cause adds to the roughly 76 million dollars of agricultural loss the state faces each year, and for a single farmer the impact can be felt in every stage of production.
When a hog uproots a stand of rice, the immediate loss is measured in reduced yields. A farmer may see a drop of several hundred bushels per acre, translating into a significant revenue shortfall. In addition, the animals can damage irrigation equipment, break levees, and create holes that require costly repairs before the next planting season.
Beyond the obvious loss of grain, hog activity compacts soil and disrupts water flow, which can delay planting and increase the need for additional fertilizer or re‑leveling work. Those hidden costs often add up to thousands of dollars per field, stretching a farmer’s budget and labor resources.
Effective control measures-such as strategic fencing, coordinated trapping, and participation in community hunts-help reduce the hog population and protect crops. Programs like the Troops & Tusks tournament bring together growers, volunteers, and veterans, turning hog removal into a shared effort that benefits both the agricultural community and those who have served.
When growers and veterans work side by side to manage hogs, the result is healthier fields, lower expenses, and a stronger sense of purpose. With about 23 veterans a day lost to suicide in this country, the added camaraderie and purpose of these hunts can make a real difference beyond the farm fence.
