Where Your Tournament Entry Fee Goes: The VFW Post’s Role

A look at how the entry fee from the feral hog tournament supports Fredrick Hebert VFW Post 4158, Hero Hunts and other veteran assistance programs in Acadiana.

The annual feral hog tournament brings together hunters, veterans and volunteers to tackle a problem that costs Louisiana about 76 million dollars in agricultural damage each year. When you pay the entry fee, it is not just a ticket to the competition; it is a direct contribution to a local VFW post that serves the veteran community.

Fredrick Hebert VFW Post 4158 receives the entry fees and allocates them to programs that help veterans stay connected and healthy. A portion funds Hero Hunts, which pairs veterans with experienced hunters for guided outings that provide both recreation and camaraderie. The remainder supports a range of assistance services, from emergency financial aid to counseling referrals.

The post also works with local food kitchens and families in need, using the tournament’s harvest of hog meat to provide meals. This dual purpose-reducing hog populations and feeding the community-creates a tangible link between the hunt and the people it helps. In a country where about 23 veterans a day are lost to suicide, these connections can make a real difference.

By participating in the tournament you help keep the hogs in check, support veteran programs, and contribute to food security in Acadiana. The VFW post’s stewardship of the entry fee ensures that every dollar goes back to the community that makes the event possible.
