November 3, 2026 · Read at American Hunter →Accurate, safe, and consistent weighing of hogs starts with a clean, gutted animal, which supports both control efforts and veteran‑focused donations.
When a hog is placed on the scale with its organs still inside, the weight includes food, blood and water that will be removed later. That extra mass skews the numbers, making it hard to track how many pounds of meat are actually harvested and how much impact each team has on the hog problem.
Removing the entrails before weighing also protects the crew handling the animal. Gut contents can spill, attract flies and create a mess that is difficult to clean in a field setting. A gutted hog is easier to move, less likely to slip, and reduces the risk of accidental injury during the weigh‑in.
The final weight is the figure that determines how much meat will be sent to food kitchens, families in need and the veterans who helped. A clean, gutted carcass can be processed quickly, packaged safely and delivered without extra handling steps. That consistency helps the volunteers keep the donation pipeline flowing smoothly.
In Acadiana, where feral hogs cause about 76 million dollars of agricultural damage each year, every accurate pound counted helps the community and the veterans who stand beside us. Knowing that about 23 veterans a day are lost to suicide nationwide reminds us that the tournament is more than a hunt; it is a chance to bring people together, protect the land and provide real support to those who served.
